Motrex LLC Battery Test Engineer – Lithium-Ion Batteries in Charlottesville, Virginia
The Lithium Product UL Test Engineer is responsible for achieving UL approval of selected Industrial lithium products. Duties include working with UL to design and execute various UL required test plans to determine and verify performance of lithium battery products for Industrial Motive Power and/or Stationary applications. Areas of activities include test plan definition and test plan execution. Product being tested may be small energy lithium cells, larger lithium packs containing multiple cells, or larger lithium systems containing multiple packs. The position is located in Charlottesville, VA. This position is an important technical team member that has broad responsibilities to support the MP Lithium Engineering team.

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty under the guidance of the appropriate supervisor and/or independently. Essential duties include the following; other duties may be assigned.
Work directly with UL to define product test plans to verify products meet UL requirements
Serve as subject matter expert for UL test standards and test protocols for lithium products.
Responsible for defining and acquiring any needed test equipment, test fixtures, recording equipment, proper sensors and associated data management methods.
Actually perform said tests utilizing internal test equipment. If needed, engage outside test companies and co-ordinate test performance and management of resulting data from testing.
Work with UL to review test data results and interpret said data with respect to performance against UL specifications. If test does not meet expected results, make specific recommendations for product improvement.
Facilitate the use of automated test methods to optimize test speed and minimize delay in securing results.
Prepare recommendations for continuous test capability improvements regarding test machinery and test methods.
Acquire and maintain a library of applicable test standards for lithium products as subject matter expert.
Make oral and written presentations (i.e. test results and associated implications)
Contribute to product related problem solving activities
Manage product testing activities which require strong cross functional engagement. Facilitate team building.
Effectively manage product test lab budget for efficient use of funds and control of expenditures.
- There are no direct supervisory responsibilities but the position will need to provide direction to other product development engineers, technicians and line operators in the planning and execution of development projects as appropriate.
Education, Experience, Certifications:
BS in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical or equivalent technical field. Prefer minimum 5 years of experience in testing lab or similar product evaluation in an industrial environment
Good understanding of fundamental product testing concepts
Lithium battery experience preferred
Must be comfortable with hands-on working environment in test lab setting for lithium battery products

Mathematical / Reasoning Skills:
Ability to solve practical problems and handle a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists
Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form
Ability to write detailed technical reports concerning assigned projects
Excellent verbal and written communication skills, good record keeping and documentation skills.
Ability to speak effectively before groups, and to communicate professionally with colleagues and managers.
PC Software Knowledge:
- Computer applications knowledge in Windows environment with MS Office experience plus familiarity with operating within Google Suite
- Hearing, speaking, seeing, writing, standing, lifting (50 lbs.), sitting, bending, walking, and carrying
Normal office and test lab environment is typical.
Travel, other requirements:
Minimal domestic travel within the US
No international travel expected
