Motrex LLC VRFB Systems Engineer - Contract in Alpharetta, Georgia
Overview
This is a contract position.
The Vanadium Redox Flow Battery (VRFB) Systems Engineer will be responsible deploying systems engineering best practices to help optimize a modular, cost-effective architecture and achieve operational reliability of all VRFB Systems/Components (VRFB products). The Systems Engineer will work closely work with the VRFB product leader, product marketing team, and several senior leaders to employ Quality Functional Deployment techniques to establish and continuously update a technical roadmap for the VRFB product line. Once the QFD is significantly mature, the candidate will expand their scope to also include supporting the VRFB design team to mature next generation VRFB product designs to broadly meet the market needs (including latent needs), differentiate from competitive offerings, manage technology trade-offs and applications, analyze and respond to price-performance trade-offs, manufacturing trade-offs, and other full life cycle system attributes. The Systems engineer will synthesize said knowledge to propose and contribute to VRFB designs that optimize across the multiple dimensions of this commercial-technical space. The person will write and/or support the development of market requirements documents (MRD) and/or the product technical specification at the beginning of a project. They will also lead the development of VRFB project test specifications and be an instrumental hands agent in support of testing, iterating, and passing the requirements stated. The position will also participate in technical sales support and proposal development.
Responsibilities
Initial efforts will focus on using the QFD methodology to develop a technical roadmap, with the support of 4-5 other senior leaders. As the roadmap matures, they will also be asked to support defining the system architecture and produce structured bill of materials (BOM). They must effectively help manage the interfaces between the main subassemblies and work with manufacturing teams to support the design for manufacturing assessments. In addition, they will be responsible for producing requirements definition documentation, operation and maintenance manuals, and take ownership of the overall component and product testing operations. To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty under the guidance of the appropriate supervisor and/or independently. Essential duties include the following; other duties may be assigned.
Deploy QFD methodologies to develop a technology roadmap
Employ standard systems engineering and model based system engineering practices (functional diagrams, functional decomposition, trade studies, modularity and integration options), must be proficient in Python
o Synthesize market & business requirements into an architecture/product portfolio
o Define common and unique components and subassemblies
o Define interfaces and elements that cross the interface
o Create functional diagrams of the product / family
o Build commercial/technical pro/con, tables, and other analysis
o Create and deliver technical product specification and requirements
o Lead D/PFMEA creation and maintain to drive down RPN score
o Lead creation of DVP&R, following testing and lead resolution of issues as failures arise
- VRFB Products include, but are not limited to
o VRFB system components including stack power assemblies, tank electrolyte assemblies, and power conditioning units.
o Power Electronics, inverters and convertors
o Specialized data acquisition equipment
o IoT / Cloud tools and services
o Energy Management Systems
o Battery Management Systems
o Module Management Systems
o Specialized electronic and control systems
o Power-by-the-Hour data collection and payment collection systems
o Unit operational monitoring and dashboards
As needed, define skills requirements and expand the team to ensure the company has access to the proper technical skills to provide technical success.
Deliver a team collaboration culture within the Engineering group as well as outfacing collaboration to customers and other departments.
Supervisory Responsibilities/Authorities:
There are no direct-line supervisory responsibilities, but the position will need to provide clear and understandable guidance to other product development or application engineers.
Qualifications
The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.
Education, Experience, Certifications:
Engineering degree required
Degree in Systems Design & Architecture preferred
At least 5-10 years designing structural products, equipment, information systems and services, and electronics. More senior candidates will also be considered.
Experience using QFD methodology strongly preferred
Candidates with prior experience in energy storage components and/or systems are strongly preferred

Reasoning Skills:
Ability to solve complex problems and handle situations with only limited direction and guidance
Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form
Language Skills:
Excellent verbal and written communication skills, good record keeping and documentation skills.
Ability to speak effectively before groups, and to communicate professionally with colleagues and high executives.
PC Software Knowledge:
Proficiency in python mandatory, other systems engineering software, e.g. SysML preferred
Computer applications knowledge in Windows environment with MS Office experience plus familiarity with operating within Microsoft Windows 365
Strong CAD/PLM experience and use. Experience with SolidWorks strongly preferred.

- Normal office environment is typical.

- Typical 25% travel within North America
