Motrex LLC Battery Specialist – Vanadium Redox Flow Batteries (VRFB) - Contract in Alpharetta, Georgia

Overview

This is a contract position.

The VRFB Battery expert will have broad responsibilities in establishing and helping to execute the technology roadmaps for the VRFB product lines. Candidates should be well versed in batteries and battery energy storage systems (BESS) including expert knowledge of electrochemistry, materials science/metallurgy, electrical systems, BESS control systems including the software (battery and energy management systems) and software/hardware interface, heat transfer, mechanical systems, and similar key aspects of stationary power systems. They will work closely with a small team reporting to the director to create and execute a strategic plan to improve manufacturability, reduce cost, improve lifetime and serviceability, etc. of the VRFB products. The position is in Alpharetta, GA. This is an outstanding opportunity for candidates to support a world class battery energy storage systems manufacturer that is helping to transform the world’s electricity delivery to include more renewable and clean energy sources.

Responsibilities

The Battery expert will join a strategic team that will employ a QFD process to develop a roadmap for the VRFB products. The expert will be responsible to recommend architectures, develop and perform cost-trade off studies/analysis to drive the recommendations, evaluate Manufacturability, Serviceability, Flexibility (Design) trade studies to drive the recommendations, and help define product roadmaps to fill gaps in existing commercial products as part of make vs buy analysis for the key components. Once the roadmap is in place, the battery expert will help develop and direct strategic plans to help execute the roadmap’s objectives. Successful candidates will both be creative, driven, and able to perform essential duties independently as well as able to work in a team environment. They will not have direct report responsibilities, but will be expected to direct small teams of engineers to efficiently and effectively complete tasks. Key duties include:

  • Development of quantitative models to help optimize flow battery performance to ensure they meet customer and/or engineering specifications including, but not limited to

  • Management of shunt currents

  • Electrolyte flow and pressure management

  • Thermal control system to help prevent precipitation with minimal HVAC in aggressive environments

  • Develop and recommend creative solutions to solve key challenges in manufacturability, serviceability, cost-reduction, etc. to accelerate the commercialization of differentiated flow battery products to the marketplace

  • esign product test plans to verify components and products meet requirements of customer and/or Engineering specifications. Direct small teams of engineers to execute the plans and prepare and distribute the results.

  • Serve as subject matter expert materials selection, architectural designs, manufacturing approaches, designing and selecting proper test standards and test protocols for VRFB components and products.

  • Direct review and interpretation of test data with respect to performance against product specifications. If test does not meet expected results, make specific recommendations for product improvement.

Supervisory Responsibilities/Authorities:

  • There are no direct supervisory responsibilities but the position will need to coordinate across disciplines with other product development engineers, technicians and line operators in the planning and execution of development projects as appropriate.

Qualifications

Education, Experience, Certifications:

  • BS in physical sciences/engineering

  • MS in physical sciences/engineering or equivalent work experience a plus

  • At least 10 years industrial experience in battery or fuel cell development and commercialization

  • Experience an innovation lab, product development group, or production environment in an industrial environment.

  • Solid understanding of first principles of battery design and operation

  • Strong leadership skills and ability to direct small engineering teams toward a common goal in a fast paced, demanding environment

  • Experience with any electrochemical devices preferred

  • Experience with FMEA and other failure analysis techniques, six sigma/statistical process controls, etc. are highly desirable.

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills

  • Ability to speak effectively before groups, and to communicate professionally with colleagues and managers

  • Must be comfortable with hands-on working environment in test lab setting for battery products

  • Hands on experience with SQL databases and Python preferred.

Work Environment:

  • Normal office and test lab environment is typical.

Travel, other requirements:

  • Up to 25% time, domestic travel within the US and North America

  • No international travel expected
